Round 13 Wrap-Up

Football
Finally the boys got the win they have been chasing for so many weeks. It was a fantastic team effort in what was a dominant performance against a top six side. After a much deserved presentation for the great man, it was game on and the Lions came out of the blocks swinging going two goals up into the first break. The trend continued in the second with run and carry through the middle of the ground resulting in our forwards hitting the scoreboard to make the margin 32 points at the main break. The Cats couldn’t answer the Lions in the second half who were disciplined and played an exciting brand of footy to run out eventual winners by 42 points. Jase dominated again with the usual suspects in Saad and Meredith right alongside. Aj took another scalp shutting down one of the Cats dangerous players.
The reserves had their strongest team for the year on the park that included a healthy number of senior players amongst the mix. The Lions set the tone in the first half with Brocky leading well out of the square and the midfield delivering with conviction – only inaccurate kicking made the game look closer than it was. With a finals spot on the line the boys didn’t give up and continued to move the ball at pace from the backline and into a potent forward line that was effective given how many numbers Mooroopna dropped into the hole. Rhys Clarke had the ball on a string all day and wasn’t the only one with Haz Mclean doing what he wanted. The backline needs a special mention for holding strong all day.
It was a close and disappointing loss for the Under 18 boys against the higher placed Cats. The away side came out of the blocks flying putting scoreboard pressure on the Lions and taking a 19 point lead into the main break. The boys knew that their finals campaign might be on the line and fought back to get within 12 points. However, it wasn’t meant to be with the Cats holding on to run out 14 point winners. Cam Evans was best on for the Lions with support from Tommy Martin and Luke McAleer.
Netball
The A Grade netballers may have set a GVNL record last weekend shooting 90 goals for the game. As you can imagine it was a great team effort with the girls dominating on every line, executing set plays while working hard to create turnovers. Amelia Brock shot well and finished with 56 for the day with strong support from O’Sullivan and Knott. Bec Kelly and Sarah Szczykulski combined well in defence to help make it a great percentage boost for the girls.
B Grade also put in a dominant performance to run out ultimate 52 goal winners. There were winners across the court in every position, especially down back being able to keep the Cats to only 18 goals for the game. Elizabeth Fuhrmeister was best on court with support from Alice and Tegan.
The B Reserve girls also got back on the winners list with a convincing win over the cats by 47 goals. Dominating from the outset, a strong defensive unit kept the Cats to only a couple of goals in two of the quarters. Sarah Brown shot 42 for the day in a standout performance.
The young Lions and Cats had a close game in Round 9, but the Cats have improved and were too strong in the end last weekend. Claudia Cook and Courtney Aldous worked hard through the mid-court and Georgia Velt shot well for the home side. The girls battled hard but the Cats put the foot down in the last quarter to run out eventual 14 goal winners. Georgie Engel was best for the Lions.
