Football
In an important game for the Lions with the possibility to jump up to ninth on the ladder, the boys came out firing keeping Mansfield goalless in the first quarter and only allowing them to kick one goal up until half time. It was one of the best halves for the year with the backline holding strong, then creating attack from behind the footy and the midfield on top. The second half turned into a scrappy game, even though the boys stayed on top and the forwards were putting on a show led by Saady who kicked eight for the day. Brando, Tommy Freeman and Matty O’Keefe were among the Lions best.
With finals a lock for the reserves, it’s now about where on the ladder they will finish – potentially finishing as high as fourth or staying in sixth position. The boys didn’t play team football in the first half, chasing kicks and not working together. The scoreboard showed the result, with the Lions only being four goals up at the main break. The boys pulled themselves together with some direction from the Red Man and came out to show what they are capable of, kicking ten goals in the last half with inaccurate kicking making the score line better than it should have. Best for the Lions included Zig, Chappy and Haz McLean.
It was a new look team again for the young Lions, with the Assumption boys being unavailable, and a must win game to stay in the race for a finals berth. The boys came out firing and broke the game open in the first quarter, kicking five goals and keeping the Eagles goalless in the first term, only allowing one goal through before half-time. The Eagles fought back in the last half, breaking even in the third and outscoring the Lions in the final term to give the bench a few mild heart attacks. The damage was done though and they ran out 38 point winners. Best for the Lions was Tom Martin, Bairdy and Jesse Thelen who slotted four goals.
