ANZAC Day Summary

Football
The excitement was high for the much anticipated ANZAC Day clash and what for many boys was their first night match. After a fantastic tribute, full credit to Euroa, it was on and started as expected – a hot footy! Both teams attacked the ball hard looking to get the upper hand in the first two quarters, but after an early Euroa attack by half time it was all square. The trend continued in the premiership quarter and with the pressure high, only three goals were scored for the quarter with the Lions just in front. The fourth term saw an even contest early with both aides trying to get on top early, but it was Euroa who kicked goals at the right time and put a few through late to run out winners in what was an exciting game of football. Meredith was outstanding, Rory Scopel and Will Brock also playing strong games.

With both sides undefeated, the reserves match was set-up to send a message to the rest of the competition early. The first quarter lived up to all expectations with the Lions starting strongly, but unfortunately that was the last we saw of dominance from the visiting side. In the second term, and continuing on for the game a cleaner Euroa side put scoreboard pressure on the Lions who were only able to manage another three goals for the rest of the game, even though they broke even during the third quarter. Brency and Ricki Misiti were standouts for the Lions.

The young Lions were a different look team with the Assumption players having school duties, but the endeavour to win the game was never in doubt. In the first three quarters, the Lions battled hard to hold off a strong Euroa side that was attacking relentlessly with the backline repelling well and mid field working hard. The floodgates opened in the last quarter unfortunately, with Euroa breaking the pressure putting on six goals for the quarter to make the scoreboard look worse than it should at the final siren. Kyle Winter-Irving played well with strong support from Jay Eager and Max McLean.

Netball

A Grade – Sey 43 d Euroa 41. Predicted as match of the round, this game lived up to all expectations. A tight tussle from the first whistle with both teams showcasing new look sides. A relatively even first half saw the Magpies going into the main break with only a one goal lead. Some changes to the Lions midcourt and great goaling by Kath Knott and Milly Brock allowed the girls to run out three goal winners in a nail bitter. JC Footwear award – Milly Brock

B Grade – Sey 56 d Euroa 28. The B grade started round three in fine form taking the first half 30 to 9. An injury to Grace O’Sullivan gave Under 17 player Courtney Aldous her first taste of senior netball. Courtney combined nicely with Abby, Tegan and Alice to help the team regroup and finish the game strongly with a 16 to 6 final quarter. McDonalds award – Jasmine Smith and Leading Edge Jewellery award – Bec Bat

B Reserve – Sey 37 d Euroa 34. The B Reserve team have made a great start to the season winning 3 from 3, but Euroa made the girls earn their 4 points on ANZAC Day. The Lions looked strong early taking a 6 goal lead into the first break. However, the Magpies fought back winning the second and fourth quarters. Sarah Brown combined nicely with Lyndel O’Sullivan in goals, while Morgan Zotti and Rachael Mundy worked hard in defence. Josie’s Hair and Beauty award – Emily Martin

17 & Under’s – Sey 54 d Euroa 18. The little lions had the biggest win for the day, running out 36 goal winners. Bonnie Dawson, Georgia Engel and Carrissa Grant worked tirelessly to create turnovers which the team were quick to convert. Georgia Velt and Emily McInerney combined beautifully in the fourth quarter to shoot a massive 19 goals, what a great effort. The O’Sullivan Builders award – Emily McInerney
