Round 9 - Wrap-Up
25 Jun 2014 by Ash Walsh
Football
It has been a frustrating couple of weeks for the senior footballers being able to match it with the stronger sides in the competition but not being able to get over the line. Last weekend was a similar story with a tale of two halves. The first two quarters simply weren’t good enough and the Cats were allowed to get out to a 33 point lead going into half-time. It was only then that the Lions kicked into gear playing the run and carry game Colby has been trying to instil all year, and it worked. It was game on at three quarter time with the margin being reduced to ten points. The boys got one point up mid-way through the final quarter, but the Cats better players stood up when it counted and kicked goals late in the final quarter to run out eventual 19 point winners. Saad again was the best with six goals that included a massive hanger. Meredith racked up 36 possessions and a goal in his first game back after injury.
The reserves side took on the fourth placed Cats undermanned again with only 19 players to run out the game. Much like the senior game, the Lions were caught napping early in the game and allowed the Cats to get the early jump. However, to the boy’s credit their effort couldn’t be questioned as they attacked the footy hard and battled it out until the end. Jesse Thelen played well in his second game for the day with Perrine and Misiti as always dominated.
It was a disappointing day for the improving Under 18’s against strong opposition. Keeping with the theme for the day, the Cats got on top early and dominated play kicking eight goals for the first half going 47 points up into the main break. The boys improved in the third quarter reducing the Cats run but were held scoreless in the last allowing the Cats to run out 82 point winners.

A Grade. Seymour 53 defeated Mooroopna 25. The Lions were made to work hard for the four points at Mooroopna, with the Cats putting in a competitive fight. With key gaoler Kath Knott absent, Milly Brock stepped up to shoot 33 of the team’s goals. Sarah Douglas and Rosie O’Sullivan worked tirelessly through the midcourt to create opportunities in attack. Ellie O’Sullivan was awarded the Josie Hair and Beauty award for the second week in a row.
B Grade. Seymour 65 defeated Mooroopna 13. The B Grade side were ruthless on Saturday opening up with an 18 to 3 first quarter. Renee Sari was on fire shooting a massive 41 goals, made possible by the accurate feeding from Abby Misiti and Tegan Hansen. The Lions continued to put the foot down shooting 19 goals in the second and fourth quarters. Claudia Cook made her senior debut and proved she is a future star to look out for. Abby Misiti took home the O’Sullivan Builders award.
B Reserve. Seymour 48 defeated Mooroopna 16. The B Reserve girls added another win to secure fifth spot on the ladder. Missing goal shooter Sarah Brown, Sophie Gregson and Lyndel O’Sullivan were among the team’s best, combining nicely to share the goaling load with 24 goals each. Ros Rutherford has returned from injury in fine form and with fellow defender Emily Martin kept the Cats to only 1 goal in the second quarter. JC Footwear award went to Emily Martin.
17&Under. Seymour 31 defeated Mooroopna 27. It was a close contest from the first whistle with both teams desperate to take the four points. With a 21 all third quarter score line Coach Cathy McInerney experimented with changes, combining Courtney Aldous and Georgia Velt in the goal circle. This proved to be the winning move, with the little Lions winning the last quarter 10 to 6. Bonnie Dawson led by example working tirelessly in defence and took home the McDonalds award. Courtney Aldous was awarded the Leading Edge jewellery award.
