Round 10 - Wrap-Up
2 Jul 2014 by Ash Walsh
Football
It was a disappointing day again for the senior footballers, not being able to match it with the Tigers side. The boys started well in the first quarter being able to just nudge in front at the first break after the away side hit the ground running. Unfortunately it was all the Tigers after that with the Lions held goalless in the second term and not being able to do much better in the third. To the boys credit, they stuck fat in the final quarter and mounted a small comeback but it was too little too late. The highlights included a Harry McLean screamer and Harry Wheeler shutting down play maker Ash Watson. Meredith was classy as ever and had plenty of it with Tommy Freeman again showing his hardness at the contest.
The reserves side was once more short on numbers but you wouldn’t have known in a gutsy win over the always strong Tigers side by just one point. The boys were still sleepy in the first quarter, but quickly woke up in the second levelling the scores at the main break. The third quarter saw the Lions fall behind again with the Tigers kicking to the scoring end. In a fantastic final quarter the boys kept the opposition to a single point for the quarter and ran out winners which put them into finals contention on the ladder. Misiti as always dominated, Haberman showed his class from the goal line and Lane was excellent.
Our young Lions bounced back after a poor display last week to win by six goals in an otherwise scrappy game. The boys started well keeping the Tigers to a single point in the first quarter and only allowing them to kick one major for the half. The second half saw them keep kicking away, eventually putting the game beyond reach in the wet conditions. Jake O’Brien, Jack Murphy and Ben Tarran were the standouts for the home side.
Netball
The A Grade netballers again proved why they are sitting on top of the ladder with a huge win over the Tigers in cold and wet conditions. The girls won each quarter convincingly, shooting away from the 9th placed Tigers with Ash Chapman experimenting with positional changes. It is a massive game today with the girls taking on the second placed Swans – make sure you get over to the court and support the girls.
B Grade dominated from start to finish on the weekend shooting a massive 58 goals for the game which was the second highest of all B Grade games for the round. The girls set the tone early with a 13 goal first quarter which had the Tigers on the back foot and continued the trend with Misiti and Renee shooting accurately. It was a great win for the girls.
In Sandra’s 500th game, it unfortunately wasn’t a fairy tale ending for B Reserve, ending in a draw. However Sandra was best on court in a game that literally couldn’t get any closer with the teams being even at every break. Emily Martin and Morgan Zotti worked hard all day in the wet conditions.
It was a tale of two halves for the young Lions who were sleepy in the first half and allowed the Tigers to get on top and create scoreboard pressure. However, the second half saw the girls come together and almost steal back the game, going down by just two goals after being nine down earlier in the game. Claudia Cook was a standout but was well supported by Engel and Velt.
