Football

Again, the senior boys came to play but fell just short after a second quarter lapse. It was all the Lions in the first quarter against the much fancied and second placed Swans – hitting the ball hard and running the ball freely across the ground. However the boys dropped off and the Swans showed why they are second slotting six unanswered goals resulting in them going into half time 16 points up. The third quarter saw the Swans kick away further and all looked lost going into the last. The young Lions sure didn’t see it that way and dominated the Swans kicking four goals to one with chances to go level late in the quarter. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and the Lions went down fighting by two solitary kicks. Jason Cole and Tommy Freeman were awesome.

The reserves boys were short again and Redda would like to thank all of the players who made a special effort to pull on the boots. The Lions came flying out of the blocks kicking ahead in the first quarter, but unfortunately it was short lived as the Swans showed their class in the second quarter putting on six goals to one. The second half was saw an even contest, but the damage was done and the Swans ran out 21 point winners. Al Davey played well along with Habes and the usual suspect Misiti. Fish has a good hit out in his first game back from an ankle injury.

Well done to the young Lions who were the only winners on the football field for the day. It was an important game for the boys with the Swans sitting just above them on the ladder and they showed how much it meant to them by kicking eight goals to one in the first half. They didn’t stop there and continued to play well as a team ultimately running out 64 point winners. Kyle Winter-Irving was back to his best with strong support from Jack Murphy and Tom Martin.

Netball

The A Grade game saw a top of the table clash with the Lions coming up against last year’s premiers. However, the game didn’t play out as first thought with our girls dominating from the outset to post a comprehensive win and put themselves a game clear on top of the ladder. Casey Adamson and Kath Knott dominated.

B Grade just keep on getting better and last weekend showed this with a strong win over the Swans who are seldom beaten by the Lions. The girls beat the Swans all over the court moving the ball with ease through the mid-court and the shooters not missing under the ring. This now puts the girls in third position on the ladder only by percentage. Tegan Hansen and Abbie Misiti played well in their milestone games.

After a couple near misses, the B Reserve girls were out to knock off the higher placed Swans – and that they did. Although the girls nearly gave the spectators a heart attack in the final quarter, they managed to just get over the line by two goals after going into the final term 14 goals up. Lyndel didn’t miss and Rach Mundy played well in defence.

The young Lions battled hard all game against the top of the table Swans side that haven’t yet been beaten this season. It was a tight first half that saw our girls match it with the best playing some great netball. However, the Swans were too strong in the end running over the top of the Lions to run out ultimate 19 point winners. Georgia Engel and Georgia Velt were the standouts for the Lions.
